Your complete guide to Gramacho Golf Resort

10 min read · Updated April 2026

If you're planning a golf trip to the Algarve, you'll come across Gramacho Golf Course within about five minutes of research. It sits in a quiet pocket of hills above Carvoeiro, a short drive from some of the best beaches in Portugal. Here's what you actually need to know — from someone who plays it regularly and lives on the resort.

The quick version

Why Gramacho is so popular

Gramacho has quietly become one of the most-played courses in the Algarve, and the reason is simple: the price-to-quality ratio is hard to beat. You can pay two or three times the green fee at the big-name courses further east, but you won't have three times as much fun. Gramacho gives you a well-kept, enjoyable round at a sensible price — the kind of course you can justify playing twice in a week.

It's a mature, tree-lined resort course set in the middle of an established community, not a bolted-on corporate layout. The fairways are generous, the greens are large and receptive, and the routing gives you enough variety that the round feels like a proper journey rather than nine holes played twice.

It's the course you'll remember playing with your friends, not because it's the most dramatic, but because you actually enjoyed every hole — and the bill didn't ruin the rest of the trip.

How it plays

Gramacho rewards steady, thoughtful golf rather than heroics. The fairways are generous enough off the tee that a crooked driver won't ruin your day, but the greens are the real test — large, undulating, and often defended by run-off areas that punish a loose approach. Leave yourself below the hole and you'll have putts you can be aggressive with; go long and you're praying for par.

There's a mix of tree-lined holes and more open stretches, which means the wind matters on some holes and barely factors on others. Keep a couple of clubs in reserve for the par 3s and play for the centre of most greens — anything else is optimistic.

When to play

The Algarve is a near year-round golf destination, but each season plays differently at Gramacho.

Practical tips

Booking tee times

Book directly through the Pestana Golf website. Multi-round passes across the Pestana courses are often available and tend to work out cheaper than booking individual rounds. If you're staying at Villa Casa Feliz, get in touch before you book and we'll share any current offers we're aware of.

Getting there

Faro airport is 45 minutes by car. There's no train that helps. A hire car makes a golf trip to the Algarve about four times better because you'll want to explore — the drive to the best beaches, the best restaurants, and the best courses is part of the experience.

What to pack

Standard golf kit works year-round. Spikeless shoes are fine. In summer take twice the water you think you'll need. In winter bring a light waterproof — rain doesn't last long when it comes, but it comes fast.

Where to stay

Pestana Gramacho itself is a resort of villas and apartments with a communal pool — convenient if you want the resort feel. For a group of three or four golfers, a private villa with its own pool often works out better value and gives you a lot more space.

Villa Casa Feliz is a private 4-bedroom villa inside Pestana Gramacho Golf Resort, a short walk from the 1st tee. For a group of four it usually works out cheaper per person than four separate rooms, and you get a private pool, a proper kitchen, private parking, and somewhere to debrief the round over dinner without paying bar prices. If you're interested, take a look at the villa here.

Final verdict

Gramacho won't appear on a "best courses in Europe" list — and the people who play it regularly don't really care. It's popular for the right reasons: a well-kept, genuinely enjoyable round at a price that lets you play it more than once. If you're planning a golf trip and trying to stretch your budget across four or five rounds rather than blow it on two expensive ones, Gramacho is exactly the kind of course that makes the week work.
